Alidoro, an unknown opera by Leonardo Leo, an important maestro in the first phase of the Neapolitan school, imposes new styles and contents on the genre of music comedy.
Leo was living through a particularly intense period of activity in 1740: six theatrical titles including re-elaborations and new productions among which was L’Alidoro.
With its highly personal skill, the librettist Federico drafted a comedy in which characters speak different languages (Neapolitan or Tuscan) according to their social status and work on different levels: one comic the other serious.

This production from Reggio Emilia eschews slapstick and concentrates on character.The cast attack their music with gusto, with Maria Ercolano particularly convincing in the trouser role of Luigi. The music, a cross between Rameau and Vivaldi, is attractive and stylishly played by Antonio Florio’s Baroque orchestra. This is a real find.

We’ll never stop to laud Antonio Florio and his vibrant Turchini for their defence of the neapolitain opera which have produced several resurrections.
.. Nearly 3 hours of holidays in Naples at an enchanting music.. ( cela ne se refuse pas!)
